CNC Milled Espresso - Pt. 2: We Tell Machines To Move
^ On Wednesday Chantal and I came in and set up the CNC and our material to be cut. The little notes in the printed guide helped with troubleshooting a lot. We even added one - to turn on the drill!
Setting up origin was straightforward, but then not. Turned out we hit the waste-board almost immediately, we think the issue was with our fusion model. Time permitting we want to fix the issue and re-attempt our cut.
At the end we could clearly see where we hit the machine. Thanks to Chantal's ears and quick action we didn't cause too much damage. We decided to quickly fix our error by adjusting the origin on the machine to as high up as possible on the z-axis.
Then we continued and ran the cut again
^ All the time-lapse I got before my battery died. Loving the atmosphere in the Thing Tank by the way. Everyone helping everyone else, talking to other years... watching machines do all the work for us :D it's pretty great.
The origin adjustment worked, but only barely! Thats some extremely thin foam on the bottom. We also lost a wall. But, we should be able to patch it up and work with clay to build a base and walls that will work for a mold. And, detail is quite lost, including the sip hole on the lid... so if we do it again we will have to make some changes in Rhino and the next run in fusion we will try both directions (x and y) for the cut as well as adjust our step-over a bit. We wanted to do this right away but there was a group immediately after us scheduled to use the machine.
^ You can see here where the drill bit went down on cup side to the waste board, and also on the lid side how it is just a bit deeper for the first few passes. We used the same piece expecting it to turn out a lot worse - we thought we would have a flat-sided cup due to the origin adjustment, but we ended up with something useable!
^ While we waited we did a bit of brand exploration for the hypothetical espresso company, Pretenzesso. While designing, we also brainstormed some ways we can incorporate it into the final piece.
Gratuitous shot showing that we did indeed clean the machine!
