CNC Milled Espresso - Pt. 2: We Tell Machines To Move

Image
^ On Wednesday Chantal and I came in and set up the CNC and our material to be cut. The little notes in the printed guide helped with troubleshooting a lot. We even added one - to turn on the drill!  Setting up origin was straightforward, but then not. Turned out we hit the waste-board almost immediately, we think the issue was with our fusion model. Time permitting we want to fix the issue and re-attempt our cut. At the end we could clearly see where we hit the machine. Thanks to Chantal's ears and quick action we didn't cause too much damage. We decided to quickly fix our error by adjusting the origin on the machine to as high up as possible on the z-axis.  Then we continued and ran the cut again ^ All the time-lapse I got before my battery died. Loving the atmosphere in the Thing Tank by the way. Everyone helping everyone else, talking to other years... watching machines do all the work for us :D it's pretty great. The origin...

CNC Milled Espresso - Pt 1: We Take Screenshots Inconsistently

Image
On Monday Chantal and I revisted our espresso cup design on Rhino to get the flow along curve correct and the step-down design working. ^ This was the issue we were trying to solve: when we created a flat template and tried to run it along the curved half-cup surface, there was always a skew and the form was left with areas without our extruded pattern. ^ After trial and error, we made our flat template bigger to wrap the entire thing then deleting the extra geometry. We wanted at an angle so the pattern would be curved.   ^ Then we could detail the pattern to leave a lip, and boolean difference the geometry to create a perforated cup.  To add the detail we wanted, we created a round perforated cup, then did a series of copies that went through the steps decreasing the scale and adding a 1.5 degree turn, or twist.   Final Cup ready in Rhino {Fusion360 screen shot will be here SOON} ^Then we transferred it into Fu...

Those Who Ignore Untouchables: Unconventional Eyewear - Paper Prototypes

Image
I made two prototypes of my design, but looking at the requirements now, the second one from plastic does not fall under the category 1) paper, cardstock, or cardboard. I'll show both anyway.  During this construction process I kept thinking about how/why this design should be 3d printed. Then, I had to keep reminding myself that this paper prototype was just about functionality... the intricate detail that would make the rings or hoops look like jewelry will come when designing in Rhino.  I began by using leftover strips of illustration board from 1st year and setting up a mirror so I could build on my own head as I went. From strips, I made the rings that would surround my head basically by bending the board into shape and using a headband to keep the support ring tight to my head.    WARNING: I look insane in these pictures and it's all very embarrassing but for the SAKE OF THE BLOG here we go: The support form ...

Untouchable: Unconventional Eyewear - Concept Selection + Refinement

Image
When thinking about the unconventional eyewear selection I was starting to get uninspired with my sketches because there was no real concept behind them... Unfortunately that was the class I missed for family reasons so I didn't get feedback on it. In my own time, I kept sketching past #14 and came up with the idea of the Untouchable Indian Royalty.  In Indian society there is a caste system and a class known as the untouchables. It is heartbreaking, these people are completely ostracised and oppressed because of their perceived status.  Now, the system is illegal in India, but the reality of society means the lowest are still a broken class. I think there is opportunity to change the narrative of who is untouchable.  When researching this topic I came across this man named Ambedkar. He was born in the caste that was classified as untouchable, but he overcame the cage he was placed in.  Ambedkar became a leader of human rights in India and a...
